BOLD Locations

Malta

Marianne Theuma, the only childbirth educator in Malta, was BOLD and organized a reading of the play on September 4. September is not an ideal time to put on a play in Malta because it’s so hot, but Marianne decided to do a less formal performance for BOLD 2006 in the garden of her home. She plans to do a much larger performance when she officially opens her new school for childbirth education. Marianne reports from Malta:

The performance was great.  It was such a good experience for all of us.  The mothers, who acted in the play, were thrilled. They bonded so well together they want to keep on meeting occasionally.  They said there's never enough time to talk about their birth experience. It wasn't easy to keep them focused during rehearsals as they kept remembering their own experiences, wanting to talk about it all the time.  Believe me, it was the best therapy to come to terms with what they did not like and would like to change. But they did very well and were very disciplined on the day of the performance. We are all looking forward to having a big performance.

It is a fact that performing the play in my garden we were more relaxed and gave more importance to enjoying the play and getting more out of it on a personal level. It was a first experience of performing a play for most of us.  Only my sister (Gillian) was a professional actress. The others were all busy mothers, thankful that they could come and have a break from the usual routine, with a difference. They really enjoyed it, saying that it gave them an opportunity to have insights about how they were affected with their own birth experience and how they would make it better, if they could. I am sure that this feeling will be radiated to the people they will be meeting in the future.

We are thinking seriously about combining the play with my official opening of the school.

It felt good to know that we were kind of joined together with other BOLD performances, even though we were separated by the distance.
