BOLD Locations

Anchorage, Alaska

We got special permission to hold our event at The Bear Tooth Theatre and Pub. They had never held a play there before-only movies and live bands. They told us they expected to lose money that night…and we sold out! Actually turned people away (sad) and made money for the theatre-a win-win!

Our BOLD Talkback panel was an OB, doula, lactation specialist, nurse mdwife, direct entry midwife and nurse. I moderated and we took around 45 minutes. At the end I asked each of the panelists what they perceive to be the reason for our (local) almost 40% c-section rate, and what they think needs to be done to turn this around. The obstetrician said he thinks the model of care with midwives attending normal, and md's doing the high risk makes the most sense. I think many in the audience were surprised by his comment. Our lactation consultant said women have to demand better care, and until they realize there is a huge problem it will be hard to change minds.

I probably spoke to over 50 people after the show and everyone raved about the play. My husband said it was way better than he expected! The following day I had tons of people coming up to me telling me what a great experience it was.

The most rewarding experience for me was the night of the performance…my entire office showing up, selling out the theatre, and having people come up to me afterwards with tears streaming down their faces, telling me what an amazing play it was.
